Opsview Capabilities

Opsview is a tool for monitoring computer networks. It communicates with devices on the network and gathers data about their operational status. Opsview is capable of monitoring network devices, workstation and servers. It is also well suited to monitoring software.

Opsview does not directly provide any facility for configuring or managing network devices.

Monitoring Engine

Opsview uses Nagios as its monitoring engine. Opsview supports two modes of data collection, active and passive.

Active Monitoring

Opsview uses a plugin model for active monitoring. Plugins are executed by the monitoring engine in order to monitor a specific function of a network device or service. Plugins are available that monitor a wide variety of:

  • Network devices
  • Security devices
  • Server hardware
  • Environmental monitoring hardware
  • Workstation and server operating systems
  • Network services software
  • Application server software

Passive Monitoring

Opsview is capable of receiving monitoring data supplied by network devices or external data sources.

Notification

Opsview has a flexible notification API and is capable of integrating with a wide variety of notification mechanisms. Common methods are:

  • Email
  • SMS
  • Pager
  • Instant Messanger Client

Web User Interface

Monitoring

Opsview incorporates a web user interface that provides real-time network status and event information. This interface includes dashboard / management views and is highly customisable.

Management

Management of the monitoring system is via a web user interface. This has been carefully designed to make task of maintaining system as efficient as possible.

Reporting

Opsview exposes Nagios' standard reporting tools providing availability and system event reporting.

Opsview Reports provides customisable, enterprise reporting capabilities. This integrates with the Opsview Data Warehouse for storage of historical performance and event data.

Integration with Other Systems

Opsview can be integrated with other, related systems. Typically these are:
